API-CSIC (Asociación de Personal Investigador del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) is an association of researchers and technicians working in the largest research organisation in Spain. The National Spanish Research Council, CSIC, was created in 1939 as a restructuration of the Junta de Ampliación de Estudios set up in 1917.

The API-CSIC objectives, defined in its Statute, are: to cooperate in the development of research, to promote the valorisation of the research work, to represent researchers in the relationships with organisms and authorities and defend their rights and to encourage contacts between researchers of any origin or affiliation and interact with other associations with similar objectives. During its long trajectory, API has organized lots of meetings and seminars, most of them about science policy, and has been an important force to defend the researchers’ rights and to keep a standard equivalent to that of university professors.

The old API- bulletins have been substituted by a (digital) monthly newsletter and our website http://www.apicsic.com contains news, forums and blogs.

The imminent transformation of CSIC into a Research Agency will decrease the researchers’ representation in the managing board and thus the role of API is expected to become even more important. Under these circumstances, mutual support from international organisations will be critical. Moreover, the unavoidable globalisation should bring about opening the national organisations of researchers to increasing exchange and contacts to address common challenges.
